RESEARCH

In the MESE Lab at Xiamen University, we conduct multidisciplinary research covering nanomaterials, functional coatings, and electrochemistry. We focus on the development of new methods for large scale synthesis and processing of nanomaterials and coatings, the fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships, and the utilization of these functional structures in electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, as well as chemical devices and medical implants.

Nanomaterials

We focus on the continuous flow synthesis and plasma synthesis (both the chemical vapor deposition and physical sputtering) of nanomaterials and thin films at large scale with controlled morphology, composition, surface functional group and defect concentration, and investigate their structure-property relationships.

Coatings

We develop and test multifunctional surface coatings for improving the performance against corrosion, heat, oxidation, and wear in extreme conditions, and apply these coatings to chemical processing devices. We also develop biocompatible coatings to improve the antibacterial activity of medical implants.
02

Energy & Catalysis

We exploit earth-abundant materials (oxides, phosphides, and nitrides) for electrochemical energy storage (aqueous zinc ion batteries and supercapacitors) and electrocatalysis (e.g., nitrate/nitrogen reduction and water splitting). We are particularly interested in developing flexible energy micro-devices.
